The Magical Fruit!

 {beans via my backyard}
 Happy Memorial Day, everybody!

Hope yours is filled with sunshine and good times, as mine is surely to be.

Urban garden update: progress of my early girl tomatoes and green beans is astounding. Check these babies out! Seriously, beans already?! This little plant isn't even 12" tall yet -- heck, one of those beans is nearly the length of the plant itself! Time to to some staking up already! Woop woop!

Hey Mamas...It's Your Day!

 {recycled flowers by Yoav Kotik via TreeHugger}

Happiest of happy days to every one of you awesome mothers out there! I hope your day is filled with smiles, hugs, giggles, and whatever wonderful things you can imagine.

If you happen to find some extra time on your hands today for some hands-on projects, here are a few of the latest projects on my radar...Enjoy!

Candied bacon...c'mon. How good would some candied bacon be atop a maple buttercream-frosted cuppie? Yep. I thought that might getcha!

Recycled paper flowers...let your imagine soar for sources (like the above soda box flowers). Here are a few tutes around the web as a place to begin.

 Living with Less, according to Re-Nest. OK, ok. It's not a craft, but it IS a DIY. And it comes with weekly tasks. And you end up with a tidier, more livable home environment. How does that not suck?! I started with my bedroom closet a few weeks ago and, admittedly, lost steam. But these weekly posts has my spirit renewed! I. Will. Do. This.

Modern Quilt loveliness. I am determined to be a quilter. Sort of like a really hip, modern granny sort of quilter. Part of me wonders if I should take a class, or (like everything I do) just dive right in and figure it out. There are so many amazing mod quilts floating around the Web, it's hard not to want to make one, too!

Luck o' the Irish to Ya!

{found via Twig & Thistle}
Happy St. Patrick's Day, dears! Not sure what my plans for the day entail (aside from work, that is) but I hope it involves corned beef and maybe a Guinness (but I'd settle for a Heineken. Hey! It's in a green bottle!)

What I really want to do, however, is make these (above) darling little rice treats a la Twig & Thistle. Seriously. Does Kathleen's creativity know no bounds?! I adore her blog. You could spend hours reading all its loveliness! And tell me those details don't just getcha...from the minty green cake stand, the vintie floral fabric, and those scallop-edged paper sheets...Oh to have a world this lovely all the time!

So, regardless of your plans for the day, I do wish  you loveliness and laughter. Get inspired and try a new project! Anything to make you smile (and go pinch someone not wearing green!)

Hello Magpie, Handmade Holidays + Scoutie Girl

{flag tags via ohhellomagpie}
If you can believe at all the windfall of blessings I've had this week, here's one more to add to the heap...Today, Hello Magpie was featured on Scoutie Girl! The absolutely AMAZING Tara and her stunning blog have been a great inspiration to me from Day 1 of this whole "Let's maybe start a business" thing of mine and, heck, even before, when I was just a humble blogger. This year, when challenging myself to get outside my comfort zone and set big goals, I approached Tara to see if she would be at all interested in featuring my little ol' shop. Not only did she say yes (!!) she allowed me to delve into what handmade holidays mean to me. What an incredible opportunity. Thank you, Tara!

Please take a moment to read the article, leave a comment, share what the handmade holidays mean to you -- and give Tara a special thank you, because she's one of the fantastic folks I'm thankful for this year!

Signing off til next week...Happy Thanksgiving to all my U.S. friends ♥

xo Evelyn

And another amazing Etsy Front Page Treasury!

Etsy Holiday Boot Camp Shop Feature: castleco

What better way to start your week than to share an amazing Etsy shop -- Castle Company Soaps, run by the former Ohioan Beth! It was great to connect with Beth because I adore handmade natural soaps...especially goat's milk soaps, more than just about anything. Her combinations of scents are amazing...from vanilla to lemongrass, I love every, single option!
When asked what she loves most about being part of the Etsy community, Beth says perfectly...

"People from all walks of life and from all corners of the world come together because of one common interest --- we love handmade items. We’re all crafty artisans using different mediums. There is a sense of kinship and we’re more than just friendly towards each other. We want others to succeed as much as we want to succeed ourselves. We celebrate everyone’s first sale, 100th sale, every treasury…any bit of success that we have. We’re a family with some dysfunctional members. But when it matters most, we’re there for each other. We’re global and next-door neighbors at the same time. Although I have seen some complaining, I’ve never seen competition. It’s a safe place to express one’s talents.
"Luckily, my mother passed her craft gene down to me. During one visit, she gave me a handmade goat milk soap bar that she made. Once I tried it, I was hooked and I will always use handmade soap. It’s so gentle and soothing and kind to my skin.
I enjoy making soap and am currently creating other recipes. Curing time is between 4-8 weeks and scents/appearance change during that time. It's interesting to see the end result since there were some batches I didn't think started off very well, but surprised me as time went by."

Are there scents you'd love to see? Let Beth know, as she's always open to new ideas

Don't forget to hurry over to her shop and get those orders in...her holiday-wrapped bars would certainly make for a perfect hostess or stocking stuffer gift!

Etsy Holiday Boot Camp Shop Feature: raori

The Etsy Holiday Boot Camp shop love continues this week with the darling shop raori, run by the fantastically creative seamstress Hanna. Based in Brussels, Belgium, Hanna creates the most amazing clothing and accessories for folks big and small.

In dear Hanna's words...

"Hi there, I’m raori. No actually, my REAL name is Hanna, but when I’m making something, I go under raori. Most of the time I’m very sweet, but sometimes I can get really angry, like a lion. An old friend told me I sounded like a lion when I was angry, so he started to call me raori. As in the roar of a lion, you know.

I live in a sunny apartment in Brussels with my little creating family of four. My husband is a musician and songwriter, so we create together whenever we can; otherwise it’s just the kids and me. My daughter models, gives me pins or paints on t-shirts, while my son studies us from the floor and learns how to crawl.

I started to make clothes when I was sixteen- since then there has been nothing else for me! I studied fashion in Sweden and London during four years and worked later in the design department for Gant and Bondelid in Stockholm before I decided to live in Tokyo for a while. The love of my life was there waiting for me and now we live in his hometown- Brussels.
I would love to chat and to know who you are - my dear visitor- and to make new friends, so don't hesitate to convo me if you want, for any reason- even just to say hi :) You can contact me in English, Swedish, Français ou 日本語 だけどカタカナとひらがなは大丈夫でも感じはちょっと。。。"

Now, feel free, dear reader, to stop on over to raori + say hello :)

Etsy Holiday Boot Camp Shop Feature: mybedlinen

Can you believe it's already time to begin holiday shopping? I can certainly say that, thanks to Etsy's Holiday Boot Camp, my Etsy shop ohhellomagpie is in full swing. October was my busiest to date, not to mention the most creative + productive...check out my new Farmhouse Garland Advent Calendar Kit if you don't believe me :)

But enough about me. Let's talk about Etsy Holiday Boot Camp for a moment, shall we? Last week was a big week, as we were each asked to reach out to the blogging community with the goal of having our shop featured this holiday season. Following in the footsteps of other super Etsian+bloggers just like me, I asked that, if any shops were interested, that I'd welcome them with open arms here at OMW! One such darling Etsian, Daphna from mybedlinen, contacted me and, after seeing her shop, I was overjoyed to share her shop with you all.

So, please give a warm welcome to Daphna, pop over to her shop, and start adding to your shopping list!

A bit about Daphna:

Daphna was a fashion designer in Spain for 18 years. After she stopped working in fashion, she began designing bedding for toddlers and kids as a hobby. As people started ordering her bedding sets, she turned her passion into a profession and hasn't stopped since.
 "I share my life now between Spain and Israel. My bed linens' style is European with a clean and modern design, using traditional handmade technics like embroidery and applique. Each set is made individually, no mass production. The designs are either colorful and whimsical or delicate and subtle, to match the different mood in your child's bedroom. My goal is to create that special bedding set for toddlers to twins that will embellish and brighten up their room.The bedding sets are also a great gift for baby showers, birthdays and any other occasion, and they arrive beautifully wrapped up."

"Being part of the Etsy community is the most rewarding thing that has happened to me since I stop working as a fashion designer (many light years ago). I never thought I would be so involved again in creating and selling my designs, but Etsy is such a great place and the people with whom I have interacted so far are so friendly and appreciative that it gave me the desire to work all over again, and that is what I have been doing since."

Spooky Scary Happy Halloween a la Mildred Hubble

{The Worst Witch, Mildred Hubble}
Happy Halloween everyone! Hope everyone enjoyed the very last day of October, 2010. Ours was a busy, fun, candy-filled one, that's for sure :)
 {The Grand Wizard}
And, of course, I had to share a couple pics of  how our costumes from The Worst Witch turned out. Personally, I think they turned out pretty well! And Giuseppe, the ex-lamb. He was a grass-fed guy who used to live on an Ohio farm. Then Mr. M placed an order. Giuseppe made a great stew and his head scared a. lot. of. people. And yes...it's real, despite the 6 year old girl who told her friends, "Oh, don't believe all that nonsense." I didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise.

{Giuseppe's head. Ew.}
Here's to turkeys and holiday shopping! November. Can you believe it?!

Halloween 2010: The Costume Idea

Halloween is a monumental affair at our house. Bubs heartily admits it's his favorite holiday and gets more excited than anyone I know when all the stores start getting their candy and decorations out on display. Rightly so, the Great Costume Debate starts sometime mid-summer. Like any good crafty person, I like to fashion my own costumes. Call it therapeutic or frustrating beyond belief, piecing together a costume every year makes me so very happy. And anyone who knows me knows that I'd rather not do anything at all, if I can't do it properly! I recall one past Halloween where the DH and I went as an angel and a devil -- me donning white feather wings nearly as big as me and he in a black suit and horns. Quite chic, if I do say so myself!

This year, I decided to take on a bit of a challenge...let me explain.

When I was a kid in the 80s, my sister and my hands-down, absolute favorite Halloween special was The Worst Witch. Precursor to Harry Potter, Miss Cackle's school for young witches bore Mildred Hubble...the worst witch. Played by a young Fairuza Balk (of The Craft & Almost Famous), Mildred is a hapless, helpless witch-in-training, who gets stuck with a little tabby cat named Tabby, can't fly a broom without crashing, fails all her spellmaking, endures endless taunts by Ethel Hallow, and saves the day, earning her a special flying lesson with The Grand Wizard (the one and only Tim Curry.)

First, let me tell you how terrifically terrible this movie really is. If you've never seen it or it has been awhile, check it out on YouTube! Sure, it's in 8 parts, but it's all there...in all its awful special effects glory.

So...back to the costume. I'm going to attempt a Mildred Hubble persona and Bubs is going as The Grand Wizard. I can't wait! Bits and pieces are already coming together...updates are soon to come :)

What about you...What's your favorite Halloween special? What's your costume this year?

Freebie Friday: The Necktie (Father's Day edition)

{img}
I got the nicest email the other day from Matt over at Tiepedia. Gotta give props to a guy doing his blogging thing, especially when it's not a tech or sports blog! It's all about the quintessential man essential: the necktie. Now, call me crazy, but I freaking love the look of a man in a necktie. It just seems right somehow. Maybe that's old-fashioned, but hey, I've been known to like all things old-fashioned.

So, as I was saying. Matt has a great post on necktie cakes, which I completely love. Definitely check it out! (Thanks for the link, Matt!)

It also got me thinking...Father's Day is Sunday. Do you want to make an extra-special gift for Pops this year? Why not make him his very own, custom-made necktie? Even dads who don't like ties would like it if you made it with your own two hands! Need a pattern? Check out Andy Gilchrist's man-friendly blog Ask Andy About Clothes for a great DIY necktie tutorial.

Happy (early) Father's Day to all the dads out there + have a great weekend!

Freebie Friday: Handmade for Mama

Handmade Mother's Day
{all projects found here}

Mother's Day is just days away, folks. Still looking for the perfect gift? Why not make her day even more special with a handmade card or artwork made of cut paper? If you need some inspiration and direction, definitely check out the Japanese Canon Creative Park. You'll find beautiful printables, cut paper projects, envelopes, mini cards, photo card templates...it would be nearly impossible not to find something for every mother near and dear to you! These were just a few of my favorites (isn't that canary adorable?) Head on over to the Creative Park website for lots of projects to hand-make for mama this Mother's Day!

Freebie Friday: Amigurumi Bunny Egg Cosy

These little cottontails will be making their way to my two nieces this Sunday, but instead of real eggs, they'll be accompanied by chocolate Cadbury's eggs (which are just way more fun to give!) Not bad for about an hour per bunny, a bit of scrap yarn, embroidery floss, and plaid grosgrain ribbon. I used Lion Brand Yarn's free pattern found here. (*note: you do have to register to view their patterns, but it's more than worth it. No spam and tons of great free projects!)

Prior to this project, I had never made pom-poms before, but I really liked how they turned out. I mean, what's a bunny without a pouf for a tail? I used Bella Dia's easy peasy tutorial here for help.

I'm signing out for the weekend. I wish for you this weekend a renewal of spirit, peace in your hearts and smiles on your faces. Please do not let the sentiment of the season be lost in chocolate eggs and plastic grass. Rebirth, renewal, and resurrection all go hand-in-hand. Whether we're talking about nature or faith, it's really all the same language. Here's to enjoying the friendships you have, hugging loved ones and giving thanks!

Freebie Friday: Natural Easter Egg Dyes

It's about that time, folks. I've found myself poking around Martha Stewart's website looking for cheery spring-related craft inspiration. More often than not, perusing Martha Stewart's projects nearly always leaves me feeling a little inadequate and, admittedly, pretty overwhelmed. Talk about a team of crafting superheros! Is there anything they can't do, seriously?

You can imagine my elation when I came across these great recipes for all-natural Easter egg dyes, courtesy the wonder that is Martha. I love me some Easter egg dying. Sorry, Paas. My Easter eggs are going au naturel this year.

I think I'll tackle the red cabbage (blue), coffee (brown) and beets (pink) this year. What about you? Will you give these natural dyes a try this year, too?

(P.S. The ingredients are safe for composting AND eating. That ultraviolet purple Paas egg? Not so much.)

"Simply Loving" Valentine's Day

Remember me mentioning how I signed up for Loves of Life blog's "Simply Love Swap", where we get paired up and get to buy some fun little spoil-me gifts for our lovely recipient, all in the name of brightening up someone's Valentine's Day? Well, I got my box of goodies yesterday and couldn't wait to share it with you.
My swapper Amy is a total doll. She has a great blog called The Un-wife Housewife Life where she shares all about her life as a student, girlfriend, homeowner, puppy momma and lots more (trust me, this is one busy lady!) She's also super sweet and unbelievably generous. Not only did I simply LOVE all my swappy gifts, she really succeeded in making me feel super special (and not a little spoiled!) She included some of my very favorite things -- like dark chocolate truffles and Swedish Fish, a pink, heart-shaped cookie cutter, a lined notepad and matching set of embossed, die-cut notecards (can't wait to start using that notepad for all my lists!), an adorable little "love" candle, shiny pink lippy and a chunky funky bracelet. Yahoo! Opening all those bright pink and purple packages felt more like Christmas than Valentine's.

So this is super special thank you is for Amy, who really outdid herself. You rock!  xo, Eve

*Simply Love Swap*...join in!

Loves of Life

The ever-adorable Taryn over at Mr. Jones & Me blogged about the Simply Love Swap the other day and I had to join in the fun. I think you should, too! Katie at Loves of Life is putting together a fun way to celebrate Valentine's Day and meet lots of new blogging buddies. This Valentine's Day-related swap is sure to make you smile and have you feelin' the love, whether you have a sweetheart or not. Here's what Katie has to say about the swap:

"This swap is all about the little things us ladies *simply love* in our daily lives. Valentines Day reminds us of all the ones we love: spouses, children, parents, siblings, pets, etc---but why not our blogging bff's too? Let's let each other in on the 2-14 fun, too. Besides, getting a package filled with things you simply love the week of Valentines will tickle-you-silly and make you feel special beyond belief."

Well, I couldn't agree more and can't wait to get my swapping partner's info so I can get to shopping! If you're interested in signing up for the Simply Love Swap, please click the icon at the top of this post or click here for more info. Hurry! Sign-ups end January 22nd.

Get out your glue sticks.

Because Valentine's Day is in 38 days. Not that I'm really counting, of course. That was strictly for blog purposes. Ahem. Normally, I'm not one to gush over Valentine's day. Sure, I like it, but I require very little in the way of fancypants flowers, dinners and chocolates. Me? I like the simple, from-the-heart gestures, like the year Bubs tried to make me chocolate-covered strawberries with chocolate syrup or when he had a scavenger hunt throughout the house with hints and little treats along the way or the valentines my mom sends me in the mail, just in case it's the only one I get. The thought behind those gestures was the real gift to me and I'll never forget them. I feel the same way about handmade valentines. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more special than a handmade valentine!

I mean, seriously. How freaking adorable is this little foxy treat box featured at Paper Source? Though construction paper and glitter are a tried-and-true combo, kick it up a notch in 2010. Just follow the handy dandy tutorial and make this little guy, fill with yummy goodness and give to your sweetie to get some major brownie points and lots of smiles.

OR

Head on over to Martha Stewart for some inspiration and how-to help. These valentines were made with card stock, paint and a cut head of radicchio, of all things. Now who couldn't handle that?! {how-to found here, btw.}

If all else fails, turn to etsy for a made-by-someone-else's hand-made valentine. Personally, I love this screenprint by jessgonacha. Put it in a frame and hang it as a daily reminder of who loves you, baby.

New Year & New Beginnings!

It's hard for me to express what a truly amazing year I had in 2009. The last ten years have had their share of ups and downs - with loss and birth, moves, graduations, job changes and marriages. From start to finish, this has been a decade of true personal growth. It's strange to think that any other decade in my life may never rival the first decade of the new millennium in quite the same way, but I am beyond excitement in being blessed with every opportunity to try!

This blog started out much like many others, but has evolved into so much more for me. It's helped me to realize that my determination and creativity are my own and something of which to be very proud. Rather than allowing myself to think that I'm not good enough, creative enough or that no one would be interested, I've learned quite the opposite and, because of all of you who read my humble writings, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your encouragement has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Big things are in store for me in 2010!

So here it is...the official announcement. After many years of hoping and wishing, I'm turning a dream into a reality with the creation of Hello Magpie -- an online retail store of creative, quality handmade gifts, goods and paper works, all by me. The specifics are still in the works and will take some time, but I couldn't stand not sharing the good news with everyone who helped me believe in myself and my abilities. This has been a long-time coming and I can't wait to share more as things develop. (Trust me, you'll be the first to know as they come!)

Here's a little background history on how I came to make this decision. From as far back as I can recall, art was a huge part of my life. Musicians, painters, designers and writers abound in my family and nurturing your God-given talents was always encouraged. My mom put me in private art classes with one of my grandma's dearest friends when I was a kid. I took piano lessons from a family friend and practiced on my grandmother's piano. My great-grandfather, aunt and sister are outstanding painters, each with their own developed styles. My mom could be a singer/songwriter/pianist, writer or interior designer for a living, if she so chose. Having keen eyes, ears and nimble fingers is in my blood. It is my birth right.

It's a very long story how I went from high school graduation to college graduation, but I'll tell you this: the Columbus College of Art & Design is no joke. It broke me more than once. There were so many sleepless nights, I lost count. Literally, my blood, sweat and tears went into nearly every piece I created. I even took a nearly four-year break, in which I had a career in quality management for an IT call center.) In fact, it was that break that helped me decide the direction my life would take. After nearly six years with that company, I left to return to CCAD full-time. I had three semesters to go and I was on the Dean's List every one of them. I took my love and knowledge of computers and translated it into design. I took design courses on top of rewriting my senior thesis on sustainable home design and excelled. After all my years at CCAD, on my own, I had managed to marry my two loves -- computers and design -- and my graphic design career was born.

One thing that I had always known about myself is that I am self-motivated. I'm a self-starter. And, generally, a huge pain to manage because I really believe I could do it better if you'd just let me do it myself. Micromanagement is not my friend and neither is boredom. After lukewarm design jobs under fluorescent lights, I couldn't take it anymore. Something had to be done! My strongest skills had helped create the perfect incubator for my entrepreneurial dreams. My most-amazing family encouraged me. Things were worked out. My husband believed in me then (and believes in now.) It was decided. We'd make it work. And the rest will be history in the making, my friends. The goal is to launch Hello Magpie this Spring 2010 and what better time for new beginnings than the season of growth and rebirth? Feel free to share the word with friends and keep your eyes posted for news & updates!

So, with all of that said, if it's not too much to ask, please keep me in your prayers. I'm nervous and excited, but, above all, really proud of myself for taking this huge leap of faith. I'm going to make 2010 a year worth taking note of, you have my word on it!

Wishing you all everything your dreams are made of in 2010 and every year!

xo,
Evelyn

P.S. I haven't forgotten Passau and Prague! More lovely photos coming your way this week!

P.P.S. You guys really are the best :)
