Hello Magpie, Handmade Holidays + Scoutie Girl

{flag tags via ohhellomagpie}
If you can believe at all the windfall of blessings I've had this week, here's one more to add to the heap...Today, Hello Magpie was featured on Scoutie Girl! The absolutely AMAZING Tara and her stunning blog have been a great inspiration to me from Day 1 of this whole "Let's maybe start a business" thing of mine and, heck, even before, when I was just a humble blogger. This year, when challenging myself to get outside my comfort zone and set big goals, I approached Tara to see if she would be at all interested in featuring my little ol' shop. Not only did she say yes (!!) she allowed me to delve into what handmade holidays mean to me. What an incredible opportunity. Thank you, Tara!

Please take a moment to read the article, leave a comment, share what the handmade holidays mean to you -- and give Tara a special thank you, because she's one of the fantastic folks I'm thankful for this year!

Signing off til next week...Happy Thanksgiving to all my U.S. friends ♥

xo Evelyn

And another amazing Etsy Front Page Treasury!

Etsy Holiday Boot Camp Shop Feature: castleco

What better way to start your week than to share an amazing Etsy shop -- Castle Company Soaps, run by the former Ohioan Beth! It was great to connect with Beth because I adore handmade natural soaps...especially goat's milk soaps, more than just about anything. Her combinations of scents are amazing...from vanilla to lemongrass, I love every, single option!
When asked what she loves most about being part of the Etsy community, Beth says perfectly...

"People from all walks of life and from all corners of the world come together because of one common interest --- we love handmade items. We’re all crafty artisans using different mediums. There is a sense of kinship and we’re more than just friendly towards each other. We want others to succeed as much as we want to succeed ourselves. We celebrate everyone’s first sale, 100th sale, every treasury…any bit of success that we have. We’re a family with some dysfunctional members. But when it matters most, we’re there for each other. We’re global and next-door neighbors at the same time. Although I have seen some complaining, I’ve never seen competition. It’s a safe place to express one’s talents.
"Luckily, my mother passed her craft gene down to me. During one visit, she gave me a handmade goat milk soap bar that she made. Once I tried it, I was hooked and I will always use handmade soap. It’s so gentle and soothing and kind to my skin.
I enjoy making soap and am currently creating other recipes. Curing time is between 4-8 weeks and scents/appearance change during that time. It's interesting to see the end result since there were some batches I didn't think started off very well, but surprised me as time went by."

Are there scents you'd love to see? Let Beth know, as she's always open to new ideas

Don't forget to hurry over to her shop and get those orders in...her holiday-wrapped bars would certainly make for a perfect hostess or stocking stuffer gift!

Etsy Holiday Boot Camp Shop Feature: raori

The Etsy Holiday Boot Camp shop love continues this week with the darling shop raori, run by the fantastically creative seamstress Hanna. Based in Brussels, Belgium, Hanna creates the most amazing clothing and accessories for folks big and small.

In dear Hanna's words...

"Hi there, I’m raori. No actually, my REAL name is Hanna, but when I’m making something, I go under raori. Most of the time I’m very sweet, but sometimes I can get really angry, like a lion. An old friend told me I sounded like a lion when I was angry, so he started to call me raori. As in the roar of a lion, you know.

I live in a sunny apartment in Brussels with my little creating family of four. My husband is a musician and songwriter, so we create together whenever we can; otherwise it’s just the kids and me. My daughter models, gives me pins or paints on t-shirts, while my son studies us from the floor and learns how to crawl.

I started to make clothes when I was sixteen- since then there has been nothing else for me! I studied fashion in Sweden and London during four years and worked later in the design department for Gant and Bondelid in Stockholm before I decided to live in Tokyo for a while. The love of my life was there waiting for me and now we live in his hometown- Brussels.
I would love to chat and to know who you are - my dear visitor- and to make new friends, so don't hesitate to convo me if you want, for any reason- even just to say hi :) You can contact me in English, Swedish, Français ou 日本語 だけどカタカナとひらがなは大丈夫でも感じはちょっと。。。"

Now, feel free, dear reader, to stop on over to raori + say hello :)

Etsy Holiday Boot Camp Shop Feature: mybedlinen

Can you believe it's already time to begin holiday shopping? I can certainly say that, thanks to Etsy's Holiday Boot Camp, my Etsy shop ohhellomagpie is in full swing. October was my busiest to date, not to mention the most creative + productive...check out my new Farmhouse Garland Advent Calendar Kit if you don't believe me :)

But enough about me. Let's talk about Etsy Holiday Boot Camp for a moment, shall we? Last week was a big week, as we were each asked to reach out to the blogging community with the goal of having our shop featured this holiday season. Following in the footsteps of other super Etsian+bloggers just like me, I asked that, if any shops were interested, that I'd welcome them with open arms here at OMW! One such darling Etsian, Daphna from mybedlinen, contacted me and, after seeing her shop, I was overjoyed to share her shop with you all.

So, please give a warm welcome to Daphna, pop over to her shop, and start adding to your shopping list!

A bit about Daphna:

Daphna was a fashion designer in Spain for 18 years. After she stopped working in fashion, she began designing bedding for toddlers and kids as a hobby. As people started ordering her bedding sets, she turned her passion into a profession and hasn't stopped since.
"I share my life now between Spain and Israel. My bed linens' style is European with a clean and modern design, using traditional handmade technics like embroidery and applique. Each set is made individually, no mass production. The designs are either colorful and whimsical or delicate and subtle, to match the different mood in your child's bedroom. My goal is to create that special bedding set for toddlers to twins that will embellish and brighten up their room. The bedding sets are also a great gift for baby showers, birthdays and any other occasion, and they arrive beautifully wrapped up."

"Being part of the Etsy community is the most rewarding thing that has happened to me since I stop working as a fashion designer (many light years ago). I never thought I would be so involved again in creating and selling my designs, but Etsy is such a great place and the people with whom I have interacted so far are so friendly and appreciative that it gave me the desire to work all over again, and that is what I have been doing since."

I took the pledge, have you?

I heart handmade everything. From soap to scarves, lip balm to paper flowers, there isn't a single thing I don't adore more than when it was made with the loving hands + upending creativity of an artisan. In celebration of American Craft Week (Oct 1-10th), I've reconfirmed my pledge with the Handmade Toy Alliance to buy handmade this holiday season. Can you imagine the positive impact buying just one handmade item would have on our economy? The thanks it would show to those folks who pour everything they are into what they create? As one of those folks myself, you can't begin to imagine the joy I have when someone buys something from the Hello Magpie Etsy shop. The least I can do is return the favor :)

So. This holiday season,  I urge you to make your own pledge to buy + support independent handicrafters by purchasing at least one handmade gift. Need ideas? Check out Etsy's endless possibilities + click here to make your pledge to support our handmade nation!

xoxo

Lorena Barrezueta VS. Crate & Barrel 'Foil' Collection

On the average day, I may glance at my seemingly never-ending list of email bacn, but typically delete it or save it for later. The other day, when I received the latest dish (har!) from Crate and Barrel, I took pause. Gosh, was it just me, or did the featured C+B "Foil" line of ceramic bakeware look dangerously similar to my (favie) Lorena Barrezueta's Gourmet Collection...the "Fresh" line, in particular. Hm. Personally, I'll still opt for Lorena's work. After all, it's handmade in Brooklyn, comes in a metric boat load of different, completely fantastic sizes and shapes, and the colors. Oh, the colors. 'Tomato', 'Salmon', Chartreuse', 'Lemon', 'Celadon'; every one looks like a big piece of candy. It pretty much rocks my little world. Really. Who needs those old, wasteful throw-away tins when you can have these yummy reusable dishes?

Good Morning Ohio: Little Alouette + Handmade Toy Alliance

little alouette

{images via little alouette}
I'm excited to share a special edition of Good Morning Ohio this week...because this is the Handmade Toy Alliance's Blog Week, where supporters of the artisans and handmade toy crafters in America, get to spread the word and show some love to these amazing folks. I get to talk about one of my big favie Ohio companies Little Alouette!

·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·
Not only is Little Alouette a member of the Handmade Toy Alliance, Little Alouette is run by Amy and Joe Sharp in Columbus, Ohio. Amy is amazingly sweet and, together with her husband, they create the most amazing natural wood toys, teethers, and rattles.

Let me talk about the first time I found Little Alouette on Etsy...

I had been shuffling through my local Etsy listings when I spied a darling Ohio Maple Tree Teether. Of course, even though I don't have babies, I was smitten with the simple, clean, organic design and wanted to learn more about the folks behind so many darling creations. Having been featured on Etsy's Featured Seller, Etsy's The Stork Quit Your Day Job series, and all over the blogosphere, I also came across Amy's own blog Doobleh-vay and, a little later, discovered she's a contributor on Scoutie Girl! (What can I say? We Ohioans dig craftsy types.) Little Alouette represents to me the best in finding balance between work - home - life. Cheers to the Sharps for keeping at it :)

So. My first (and lasting) impression upon discovering Little Alouette? These are the kinds of toys I want to buy for my kids one day. These are the toys we ALL should want for our little ones. Simple, natural, local, organic, and above all...safe. No toxins. No plastics. No huge carbon cost to ship it from a factory in China. This is the real deal. Made by hand, with love.

Want to know how to get involved in supporting folks like Amy + Joe? Want to find HTA business members in your area? Visit the Handmade Toy Alliance website for more information.
About the Handmade Toy Alliance: The HTA is a non-profit organization made up of crafters, manufacturers, and importers of small batch children’s products.  In 2008, Congress passed the CPSIA to regulate the children’s product industry, but the over reaching law has unintended consequence requiring all children’s products to be tested at a third party testing lab.  The testing costs are expensive and often require the destruction of several pieces for a result.  The HTA is urging Congress to amend the CPSIA in a way that keeps safe products in the market place and maintains safety standards that protect our children.  Do your part by going to www.handmadetoyalliance.com and contacting your member congress.

Good Morning Ohio: Wholly Craft!

Did you know that to say "good morning" in Japanese is "Ohayou gozaimasu"? Yep, 'Ohayou' is a homonym for 'Ohio' and, because I think it's a super cool coincidence, it's now the name of my newest feature. Welcome to Good Morning Ohio!

I love Ohio and especially love Columbus. More often than not, when traveling and telling people I live in Columbus, Ohio, I get one of two responses 1. they've never heard of my great state or 2. they think Columbus is a cow town. That makes me sad! So from now on, every Thursday I'm going to be sharing with you a little bit of my home state! It is dedicated to all those folks who haven't yet had the pleasure of visiting Columbus (or Ohio, for that matter). It will be your quick and dirty education on all the awesomeness that is Ohio.

Hey -- if you live, work, blog or have something fantastic to share with my readers about Ohio, please let me know. Good Morning Ohio is all about supporting and loving our local yokels! Got a product? A business? A story, vacation spot, photo, event or idea? Email me!

 ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·
Good morning to Columbus/Clintonville's handmade hotspot Wholly Craft!
Wholly Craft!
This is definitely one brick-and-mortar establishment you want to support, as they offer consigned goods from over 100 local indie artists, designers, and crafters. You'll find everything from purses to plushies and everything in between at Wholly Craft! Plus, it has an awesome name.

"Wholly Craft! opened its doors in 2005. Our purpose in being is to provide Columbus, Ohio with a comfortable place to shop for handmade goods, a fun and fabulous alternative to mass-produced madness. You’re sure to find unique little gifts for yourself and your loved ones."

Best of all: This is the kind of place to drag your suburban, (literally) outside-the-loop friends. They will love it, find at least one thing to buy and thank you for showing them this very cool store. Way to support your local indie industry, Columbusonians! Win!

A (Truly) Beautiful Idea.

ABI

I have a friend-in-blogging named Evie Schaffer and I really like her. Evie is an artist, designer, Etsian, mom...you name it and she does it (and does it well, I may add), but her latest is something that involves us all -- artists, handcrafters, indie designers and conscious consumers alike. Read on my friends because it's, truly, A Beautiful Idea.

Personally, I've always struggled with how to consider myself successful if I don't do anything that makes an  honest-to-goodness difference in the world and how to find a balance between what I take and what I give back. Perhaps it's safe to say that each of us, to some degree, wrestles with these same principles. Maybe it's a simple philosophy, but I really do think that sometimes, the true successes in life are found through supporting the things bigger than ourselves.

Evie puts it eloquently when she says, "As an artist, I’ve struggled with the “why” behind the creative urges I have — to be used for something more than myself or for profits. I’ve longed for a greater purpose. I know I am not the only artist who feels this way. That’s why I created A Beautiful Idea. As a friend of mine said it so perfectly,

“How can God use artists to meet real needs in practical ways?
Cuz my creative gifts seem futile up against a hurting world. Help!”

My hope and prayer is that A Beautiful Idea will motivate artists to use their gifts to change the world."

How ABI works:

A Beautiful Idea

1. Artists partner with A Beautiful Idea and create products.
2. The artists then donate their items through the ABI Donation Center.
3. The items are then put up for sale with 100% of their proceeds being donated to the featured charity (currently World Vision, delivering relief to the people of Haiti.)

That's it. It's that simple. Amazing, isn't it?
Evie was kind enough to share even more on how ABI started and what she hopes for the future:

me: What was your "a-ha" moment in committing to A Beautiful Idea, that moment of revelation when you knew it was right?

Evie S.: ABI was one of those things that has been percolating for quite some time, maybe for as long as a year. I knew I wanted to do something with my art to make a difference, but I also knew that I wanted to do something bigger than myself. The "ah-ha" moment came while watching the movie "Ghost Town" and I really can't remember why. The idea just popped into my head and I've been formulating the details and slowly working on it ever since. That was about 6 months ago."

me: What do you see A Beautiful Idea growing to become?

Evie S.:  I'd love to see the entire arts community get involved and literally span the globe. It's great seeing all the pockets of things that artists are doing, but I think it would be awesome if there was a more unified effort so we could all see the impact we are making in the world. The Arts can be so overlooked as a form of giving back to humanity that's hurting, and I believe that ABI is something we can all rally around and show that it's important to us.

me:  What can we do to help support ABI?

Evie S.:  If you are an artist, you can join the network. If you love to shop, you can purchase products and know that 100% of your money is going to help someone in need, not to mention getting a great product! Since we are brand new, any and all publicity helps us out so we can keep the momentum going and keep building awareness. That means blogging, tweeting, and sharing ABI with your friends. You can also add a badge to your blog, become a fan on facebook, and follow us on twitter.

DIY LOVE: Homemade S'mores

Oh how I love Deb at Smitten Kitchen. All of her mouth-watering recipes and mag-worthy photos has me longing to love my kitchen and embrace all that is culinary. Perhaps that will be my new year's resolution! It's as good as any other, I suppose, though may hinder any forthcoming progress in the weight-loss department (but we can't win them all, can we?)

Homemade S'mores are a treat anyone would love (but especially your hostesses...don't go empty-handed this holiday season!)

All you'll need is a gourmet chocolate (I prefer a dark cocoa, myself) and some cute packaging and your homemade s'mores treats will be ready to give & enjoy!

For packaging, muslin bags, clear plastic take-away containers and glossy boxes with raffia would all look perfect. A personalized sticker or hang tag would be a great final touch, too.

Recipe for Springy, Fluffy Marshmallows found here.
Recipe for Graham Crackers found here.
Chocolate rec: Ghirardelli Dark 60% Cacao Chocolate Squares

Today's a hugely busy day...I'm off to buy the rest of my wedding day beauty accoutrement, attempt to tidy up my office a bit and, later this afternoon, we're meeting our event coordinator at The Worthington Inn to go over the details of our wedding reception. Hurrah!

With that said, I'll keep it short and show you some of my favorite needlepoint pieces. Oh aren't they darling? I love needlepoint. It's so...preppy! Maybe I'll take up needlepoint and round out my crafting abilities :)
